Singapore is a small, tightly controlled nation, where the poor and less educated are discouraged from breeding and chewing gum is illegal. The streets are wide and clean and there's little traffic. It seems more like a wealthy suburb in California than a country in Asia.

Little India manages to retain some of its gritty flavor. Life takes place in the streets and it smells. The scents of curry, clove cigarettes, incense, fruit and flowers all mingle in the air and give the place a vitality missing elsewhere in Singapore.
