Bringing in the catch is a community affair, simply because the nets are so huge. Sometimes there can be as many as fifteen people working to pull a net in. One advantage I offered was my round eyes. That encouraged passersby to take part for the sheer novelty of pulling nets with a 'falang' (foreigner.)
This is the 'bag' at the end of the net where most of the catch is collected. Most of the people involved in this picture, (the photographer included) have at least one fish in their pockets. That's where those that get snagged in the larger mesh of the net end up. Proper etiquette demands the fish be pocketed head first. When the 'bag' initially comes out of the water there's a frantic amount of flipping done by the panicking fish. It seems to be snowimg tiny fish scales and I always have to clean off my camera afterwards.
